Matchtang is an independent student project and is not run by Western University. This policy explains what we collect when you create an account and profile.

What we collect

• Account: your @uwo.ca email address and basic sign-in records, such as when you last logged in.
• Profile: what you choose to add, such as your name, program, year, bio, photo, what you're here for and whether you confirmed you're 18 or older.
• Activity: who you like or pass on, who you block and any reports you send or receive.
• Messages: what you send to and receive from your friends.
• Friends and parties: your friends and requests, parties you post or join, and party details, photos and addresses.
• Feedback: what you write in the feedback form. If you're logged in, it's linked to your account. If you're not, it's anonymous unless you add an email.

Your browser stores a login token so you stay logged in. We don't use advertising cookies.

Who can see your profile

Your profile starts hidden. While it's visible, logged-in Western students who are also visible can open your full profile and approved photos, unless one of you has blocked the other. If you turn on "Show my profile to other students", logged-in Western students who are also visible can see your name, program, year, bio and approved photos in Discover if you both chose the same purpose. Dating profiles only appear to students who confirmed they're 18 or older. You can turn this off at any time.

Other students can't see your email address. Moderators can see your email, profile, photos and reports to review new photos and keep the service safe.

Who can see your friends and parties

Students can find visible profiles by name and send friend requests. When you join a party, your friends can see that you requested or joined it, and the host can see your name, program and photo. Logged-in visible students can see a party's name, time, cost, general area, details, approved photos and host. Only the host, guests the host approved and moderators can see the exact address. Parties and their guest lists are removed from view when cancelled, but we may keep records needed for safety.

Who can read your messages

You can only message your friends. The people in a conversation can read it. Deleting a friend closes the chat for both of you, but the messages stay stored and come back if you become friends again. Messages aren't end-to-end encrypted, so the people who run Matchtang could access them in the database. If someone in a conversation is reported, a moderator can read that conversation while reviewing the report.

How we use it

• To let you log in and manage your profile.
• To send login codes and important updates about Matchtang.
• To show you other students and make you friends when you both like each other.
• To review photos and reports, remove content and keep Matchtang limited to Western students.
• To read your feedback and reply if you asked us to.

We don't sell your information or use it for advertising.

Who else handles it

We use outside services to run the site, and they may process information outside Canada:

• Supabase stores accounts, profiles, photos, likes, messages, friends, parties, blocks, reports and feedback.
• Resend delivers login emails.
• Netlify hosts the website and may keep technical logs, such as IP addresses.
• Cloudflare manages the matchtang.com domain and its DNS.
• Google Fonts may provide the site's font and receive your IP address when the font loads.

How long we keep it

We keep your information while your account is active. Deleting your profile also deletes your photos, likes, friends, the parties you posted, your party guest records and the messages in your conversations. Reports may be kept to protect the service. Email us to delete your whole account.

Your choices

You can ask to see, correct or delete your information by emailing us. If you're not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
